Keyboard Trays:

Attachable to the underside of the desk (desk design permitting) the aims are to provide additional desktop space and increase the viewing depth. Despite some models being available without a mouse tray we strongly advise that only models with room for a mouse to be used comfortable be purchased. If the former is chosen, in the majority of cases, the user will have no choice but to position the mouse in front of them on the desk. It is then impossible to use the mouse without excessive reaching forward and 'hovering' the arm thus causing strain on the arm and shoulder muscles. As a result the user will begin to feel fatigue and thus discomfort in that area.

If the user also needs to use a wrists rest ensure that the tray/drawer affords adequate space for this.

Before purchasing it is also necessary to check that there is enough space underneath the desk. Ask the questions - How high off the floor will the underneath of the tray be? Will the user still be able to sit with their thighs horizontal and their lower legs at right angles to the thighs? Is there enough space between the top of the thighs and the keyboard tray? Does/will the user need a footrest? If so, is there room for this? For more information about the recommended working posture why not read the It's A Set-Up page.

Available from some office equipment suppliers and ergonomic product companies prices range form £20 to £50.
