If you hold your elbows away from your body, the
muscles in your neck, shoulder and upper arms are under a constant
static load. Also, there is an angle through your wrists (when
seen from above). As a guide, if your arms tend to be raised
to the sides, you may be too close to your keyboard or your
mouse is too far away from you. If your arms tend to be held
out in front, you could be too far from your keyboard. |

 |
 |
| A common problem is having reference
material in front
of your keyboard, forcing you to stretch out whilst
typing. |
Many people position the monitor
in the corner of the desk, at an angle. This can cause
you to angle your arms and wrist in order to type. |

|
| |
- Let your upper arms relax by your sides and keep your
elbows in.
- Keep your forearms horizontal and at right angles to the
upper arm.
- Adjust your distance from the keyboard until you can work
with your shoulders and arms in a relaxed position.
- Keep your keyboard parallel to the edge of the desk when
using it.

|
Place your mouse in front of you for sessions of
intensive mouse use.
|
|
| |
- Place your mouse close to the side of the keyboard for
combined keying and mouse use.
- Learn to use shortcuts on the keyboard rather than always
using the mouse. Most shortcut key combinations are displayed
alongside the relevant item in the pull down menu of the
application.
- Try to use the mouse with either hand so that you can
change from one to the other. You may need to change the
settings of the mouse buttons.
- If you spend a lot of time using the mouse at the side
of the keyboard, get a keyboard without a numeric keypad
(an 84-key keyboard). These are usefully narrower than standard
keyboards. They are available from specialist suppliers
like Intolect.
- Keep your mouse and mousemat clean so that you don't spend
extra time holding the mouse making small adjustments. If
your mouse feels like it is sticking remove the cover underneath,
then carefully take out the ball and clean inside.
- Use the styles facility in documents, so that you don't
have to spend time formatting by hand, with the mouse.
