Also know as desk lamps these provide additional local lighting,
e.g. to highlight reference documents when copy typing.
Surprisingly to some, for computer use a relatively low level
of ambient lighting is recommended (300-500 lux). This is
often too low for viewing documents and thus increases the
potential for eye strain. It can also lead to awkward postures
as users lean forward to decipher the text in front of them.
As most would know it is impossible to find a light level
that suits all the people, all the time. Hence the first solution
to try is to adjust the ambient light to suit the majority
and then issuing task lights to those who need more light.
You will find this is a relatively inexpensive but usually
very effective method.
Prices range from £12-£85 depending on the type of bulb used
and the level of adjustability provided. Lower prices lamps
tend to use 60watt incandescent bulbs and have a limited amount
of adjustability (i.e. only the angle of the head can be altered).
The higher prices models require halogen bulbs and are angle-poised
so permit adjustment in up to 3 planes. The majority are desk
standing with a weighted base to increase stability. If, however,
space is at a premium then it is possible to purchase models
which clamp onto the side or rear of the desk.
Task lights are available from a multitude of places so it
is well worth shopping around. Try high street stores and
office equipment suppliers. Some companies have discounts
for buying in bulk so don't forget to question this when researching
suppliers.
