  Surveys, Questionnaires & Focus Groups

 

Most ergonomics projects benefit from presenting the product to volunteers, selected to represent the eventual customers or users. Generally these volunteers are called Subjects, and they are observed, measured and questioned to gather data about their interactions with the design.

 

Visual questionnaire methods, like this body map, generate more consistent data, by helping subjects to understand and concentrate on specific questions.



The numerical rating scores can then be aggregated for all the subjects, producing 'real' numbers which can be manipulated mathematically. This creates objective data from a subjective source, and enables data charts such as this one, which was used to inform the development of a reclining seat:
